Exercises for Henle FYL

Many folks have had trouble downloading the Exercises from the Scribd website.  For that reason, I have made all these available over at my new website:

MagistraJonesLatin.com

Look under the Bonus Materials section, and you will find them there.

I am unable to post and answer comments on this site any longer.  Please link to the site above and send me your comments/questions there.  I want to hear from you and answer any questions you might have.  :-)    Thank you!

I will leave these up, also, for those of you who have not encountered any problems at Scribd.

Someone recently asked if I would be adding the remainder of the Exercises (from Lesson 38 forward), and the answer is yes!  I hope to have those finished by next week.

Lessons 1 and 2 Exercises

Lessons 3 thru 6 (Unit 1)
  • There is an error on Exercise 51, #11.  It should read cum rege.  (cum governs ablative)

Lessons 7 and 8 (Unit 2) Exercises

I am including Non-Essential Exercises along with the Essentials.  These make for good Extra Credit work for eager students.

Lesson 9 Exercises

Lessons 10 and 11 Exercises

I have saved Exercise 142 Pearl Harbor in horizontal format below.

Pearl Harbor

Some of the verb conjugation worksheets are long.  The one for 3rd conjugation verbs has space for the student to conjugate each verb in all three tenses.  You may want to abridge it for your use.

Lessons 12, 13, and 14

Again, lots of conjugating of verbs in some of these worksheets.  Use what you need to encourage memorization and familiarity with the forms, without assigning busy work.  Sometimes it's hard to tell exactly what is necessary for each student.

Lessons 15 and 16

A reader just informed me that Scribd charges to access these documents.  I apologize for that!  It happened because I did not have correct settings in my profile on that site.  I've corrected that and all material should be free to download.  If not, please let me know so I can correct it with Scribd.  Thanks!

Lessons 17 through 21

These exercises cover all of Unit 5, The Passive Voice.

Lesson 22

The below document might be useful to some.  It's an introduction to the Subjunctive Mood that I use in the classroom.

Lesson 22: Intro to the Subjunctive Mood

I know I haven't uploaded exercises for Lesson 23 yet, but I came across this introduction to Lesson 23 (adjectives used as nouns) and thought I'd put it up before I forgot about it.  :-)

Lesson 23: Introduction

Below are Exercises for Lesson 23 in Henle FYL.  I will try to include the number of pages for each document when I post, so you have some idea of what to expect.  This group covers Exercises 256 through Reading #14, and is 10 pages.

Lesson 23 Exercises

Lesson 24 Exercises below.  These run from Exercise 263 through Reading #17.  I found a parsed version of one of the Readings on my computer and included it in this set. (I have no idea when I had time to do that, but I thought I'd include it as it may prove helpful to some students.)  This group is 19 pages.

Lesson 24 Exercises

Here is an Overview of Indirect Questions in Latin (as a preview to Lesson 25).

Lesson 25 Overview of Indirect Questions

Exercises for Lesson 25.  I believe Exercise 279 is missing from this group.  I guess I have never typed that one up over the years, although it would make a good in-class practice set.  Note that in Exercise 25.2 Henle does not list the particles nonne, num, and -ne in his Vocabulary.  They are present on my Word Lists, but if you are not using my companion, those are vital points to cover!

Lesson 25 Exercises

And here are those for Lesson 26.  You will see that I've included two copies of the final reading for this lesson (R#20 - Bataan!).  The second one is to show students how dividing a text up into manageable chunks makes the reading easier and more quickly comprehensible.

Lesson 26 Exercises

Lesson 27 Exercises

Lesson 28 Exercises

Lesson 29 Exercises

You will see two documents for Exercise 340.  One is formatted regularly, the second is set-up as a sort of worksheet, walking the student through the steps of translating different kinds of phrases.  These adjective phrases are difficult for some to grasp, and I've found that by breaking it down into its pieces helps a bit.

    2. Thank you, Magistra Jones! Do you have printed copy of these exercises for sale? Another question: Can the two FYL guides be used in place the Henle book and the Henle Grammar book? Do the guides contain answer key? Are there quizzes and tests in them? I look forward to hearing from you! June

    3. Good Morning. I do not have printed copies of the Exercises for sale. Most teachers/families don't use every single exercise in the book. Many stick to the Essential Exercises and add in some of the others for additional practice/review. I use the extra ones with the concepts that are more challenging for the student/class at hand.

You could download all the exercises available here, then print those you want/need as you need them.

I do think you could use the Guides in place of the actual text book except that it might be difficult to tell exactly which exercises go with which lessons. There is an online copy of Henle FYL to which you could refer for that information, though.

The Grammar book is definitely necessary. Students will refer to it more and more as they continue through the curriculum.

I think when you ask if the guides have an answer key, you are referring to the answers for the exercises, correct? No, the only answer key provided with the guide is one that gives the answers to the "practice" questions inside the guide itself.

Memoria Press sells an answer key for all four Henle texts for about $5 each.

There are no quizzes/tests in the guides. I believe Laura Berquist has written quizzes & tests for Henle FYL. I've considered putting together a Quiz/Test packet for both FYL and SYL. Perhaps I should get busy with that! :-)

Please let me know if I can answer any additional questions. Thank you for your interest.

  2. I can't seem to save or print the exercises. Can you give me a suggestion? I can work with the individual files, but the exercises do not work the same way. Thank you so much!

    1. If you click on one of the links above, it should take you to the Scribd site where these exercises are stored. From there, you should see a "Download" tab on the upper left of the page. By clicking on this you should be able to save the exercises to your computer and print them whenever you want.

      Did I answer your question?

  3. Should the last link read Lesson 22 instead of Lesson 21. :) Thank you for taking the time to do this.

    1. I just had another user check this, and she told me she was able to download the exercises once she set up an account on Scribd (which is free, by the way). Could that be the problem?

  7. For those of you who are having trouble downloading the exercises, I've thought of another way you might attempt it. If you go to the Scribd website and search for my name, all my uploaded documents should show up. I'm thinking you might have more success downloading them from there.

    Let me know!

  13. Hi. Thank you so much for all this hard work. It is a huge help. I plan to buy your teacher guides for the next school year also. In the meanime, are you planning to upload exercises for lessons 35-42? Thanks.

  14. Hi Tracy,

Yes, I am! It's just taking me longer, being in the middle of a school year. As far as the website/blog goes, I get a lot more done during the summer months for obvious reasons.

I will try to get the rest of those exercises uploaded soon. Thanks for the reminder. :-)

  19. Hello, Thank you for sharing all of your efforts with us! We are beginning our second year, and I am thrilled to have your printed exercises. I saw that you'd put a note under lesson 15 to let you know if Scribd requires a paid membership for download access. As of tonight, they required me to join in order to access the file. I thought I'd let you know in case something is awry. :) Thanks again!

    1. Michelle,

In checking with Scribd I am told that they do require visitors to set up an account on their website, however, there is no charge for the account, nor is there a charge to download these documents.

If you run into something different, please let me know so I can sort it out with them.

      Thank you! Blessings,

      Jen

  20. Thank you so much for your great work. I ordered the companions this summer, and now I am downloading the exercises. I downloaded through FYL Lesson 28 and then Scribd won't let me download anymore. Is there a daily limit or anything like that?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've not known of any limit to downloading on that site. I am looking at different websites where I can upload those documents. There seem to be recurring problems with Scribd. Feel free to email me directly. :-)

  22. I'm in the exact same boat as Anonymous from Sept 6th, 2015. I have received the AWESOME companions and have successfully downloaded lessons 1-28. When I continue to try to download the rest I get the error message: "We're sorry, but your computer or network may be sending automated download queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now."

I have waited and come back to the site, but the same error occurs. I am trying to have all of the exercises printed at the same time like a workbook. I do have an account and am logged into Scribed. Any help getting the rest of those lessons (29-37) would be appreciated. They are helping us all SO much.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Ingrid!

I know Magistra Jones has recently moved to a new site and you may have better luck downloading the materials from there - http://www.magistrajoneslatin.com/bonus-materials/.

She also has a contact form there you can reach out to her on if there's any issue with that download :)
